The Story Behind Sporting DNA
Accelerating the understanding that sport can take years to teach.
My name is Ryan Fenwick. Iām a former professional golfer, former England Regional Coach and founder of Ryan Fenwick Golf Academy.
For more than 20 years, Iāve dedicated my career to developing young athletes, from beginners finding their feet in competitive sport to international amateurs and touring professionals.
Iāve been fortunate to coach some exceptional players, including Marco Penge, Laird Shepherd and Tom Thurloway. But some of my greatest insights havenāt come from working with the most talented athletes.
Theyāve come from understanding the people, behaviours and environments that influence development.
I wasnāt just coaching the player.
Throughout my career, Iāve spent thousands of hours working alongside parents.
Conversations after disappointing performances. Helping them manage expectations. Explaining when to encourage, when to challenge and when to step away.
Sometimes the most important thing a parent can do is allow their child to experience something difficult without immediately intervening.
And over time, I realised something.
I wasnāt simply developing young athletes. I was developing their parentsā understanding too ā often without them even realising it.
Their knowledge evolved through years of conversations, experiences, successes and setbacks.
But I kept coming back to one question.
Why should that understanding take years to develop?
The thinking behind Sporting DNA
Sport has a remarkable ability to teach us about ourselves.
But too often, we only recognise the lessons afterwards.
We discover the importance of preparation when weāre underprepared. We learn about emotional control after frustration has affected our performance. We recognise the value of independence after becoming too reliant on others.
And parents sometimes discover, years later, that their well-intentioned support wasnāt always as helpful as they believed.
What if we could recognise these things earlier?
What if we could accelerate that understanding?
Thatās why I created Sporting DNA.
A platform that brings together decades of coaching experience through thought-provoking assessments and personalised Development Blueprints.
Designed to help players and parents recognise their strengths, understand their behaviours, challenge their assumptions and discover opportunities for development.
Not to judge people or label their potential.
But to help them become more aware.
Beyond one sport
Although my professional background is in golf, many of the most important influences on sporting development extend far beyond technique or any individual sport.
Responsibility. Preparation. Communication. Resilience. Independence. Decision-making. The relationship between athletes, parents and coaches.
These are challenges found throughout youth sport.
Sporting DNA was created to make these insights accessible to players, parents and sporting organisations across different disciplines.
My philosophy
AWARENESS ā HONESTY ā ACTION
Awareness helps us recognise what we do.
Honesty helps us understand what needs to change.
Action turns that understanding into better everyday behaviours.
SET STANDARDS. NOT GOALS.
Because development isnāt simply about what we want to achieve. Itās about the standards we consistently demonstrate along the way.
Why it matters to me
I want young athletes to become more independent, thoughtful and responsible for their own development.
I want parents to feel better informed and more confident in the role they play.
And I want coaches and clubs to have another way of encouraging meaningful conversations about development.
Sporting DNA is my opportunity to share what more than two decades in professional sport and coaching have taught me.
To help people recognise today what they might otherwise take years to understand.
